The future
A Plot of Land for a New Center
In December, 2018 the Board of the El Salitre Women’s and Children’s Center purchased a plot of land on the edge of Lake Amatitlan. Infrastructure work is underway on the property. Our first order of business was to secure the property. To that end the security cottage has been renovated and is now occupied by our security guard/maintenance worker and her family. We are raising the money needed to complete the infrastructure – clean water, waste management, electricity, a security wall, and removal of an abandoned swimming pool – and hope to have the work completed during 2020. Once this is accomplished we will renovate the main building on the property to hold the sewing workshop. When the workshop is complete, work will begin on a second building that will serve as a kitchen/dining area. Future plans include a children’s center and bath and laundry facilities. The land will also support gardens and space for raising chickens and goats.
The El Salitre Overview
The El Salitre Women’s and Children’s Center is beginning to develop the piece of lakeside property purchased in 2018. Within three to four years we hope to have a full-functioning workshop, kitchen, and gardens . To the right is the plot map.
The initial components of the Center will include the following:
A security wall enclosing the property
A cottage for security and grounds person
A workshop building for sewing/embroidery and perhaps other crafts developed over time. (Will occupy current house on property.)
A community kitchen (constructed in current roofless structure with added roofed and screened space for dining.)
A children’s center (perhaps constructed from two shipping containers) to include space for an infant/toddler room, a library/tech center, and a workshop/classroom.
A laundry and shower facility
Community gardens
A place for livestock (chickens and goats)
